Kultour is proud to present Aria-award winning music group Zulya and the Children of the Underground to audiences across the country. Zulya's unique sound, distinctly Russian song writing and the extraordinary musicianship of her band members create melancholy, beauty and drama while weaving through a combination of musical styles. Beginning in the Northern Territory, the national tour will see Zulya and the Children of the Underground perform at 28 venues to diverse audiences in NSW, ACT, WA, SA and Victoria. The tour coincides with the release of Zulya's much anticipated sixth album Tales of Subliming. The album signals somewhat of a departure from Zulya's previous albums. In crafting the lyrical themes of the songs for her new album Zulya revisits the fairytales of her heritage, creating her most adventurous work to date. Musically, Zulya's internationally acclaimed vocals float effortlessly above an adventurous musical backdrop that features brass arrangements (courtesy of newest band member Eamon McNelis for the most part); Tom Waits inspired tuned and mallet percussion; plus newer sounds courtesy of percussion loops, manipulated piano tones and hurdy-gurdy. The end result sees Zulya breaking new sonic ground on an album that is nothing short of an artistic triumph. Lead singer Zulya Kamalova says "We are delighted to be presenting material from my new album Tales of Subliming at City Recital Hall Angel Place. Within our rotating repertoire of songs will be pieces that inspire, move, entertain and transport the audience to new places. Audience members should prepare themselves for a fantastic musical journey". Zulya, originally from Tatarstan in central Russia, is familiar to audiences throughout Australia as a performer of traditional and original music derived from her Tatar and Russian cultural roots. Zulya has developed a totally original approach as an affirmation of her unique identity ñ an affirmation that takes her Tatar and Russian background to totally new places and in completely new ways with a highly developed sense of melody, rhythm and texture. Zulya and the Children of the Underground released their previous album, 3 Nights in Australia in April 2007 and in Europe in May 2007. It was awarded the prestigious ARIA award for the best world music album in Australia and received extremely positive coverage in major press around the world, including a glowing 5 star review from UK's Songlines.
