Happy 1000 1000 Bahagia
A man’s final moments before suicide
A journalist trapped in a world of words gone wild
A company of Indonesian and Australian Artists

Happy 1000 1000 Bahagia is multilingual physical theatre performed in English, Indonesian and Australian Sign language by mainteater, a company of Australian and Indonesian Artists.

Adapted from Austrian writer Peter Turrini’s work ’Endlich Schluss’, Happy 1000 1000 Bahagia is both monologue and physical theatre. Interweaving three languages with a visual and aural vernacular derived from Auslan, improvised movement, song and sign singing, ‘Happy 1000’ explores the role of the interpreter in contemporary theatre, and is equally accessible to anyone who is literate in any of these languages.

With pathos and humour Happy 1000 1000 Bahagia captures a man’s final moments before suicide. A journalist, reflecting on his life and his relationship with language, in a set made entirely of newspaper, is shadowed by his personal interpreters.

"This is a compelling, extremely entertaining production that moves easily between the light-hearted and the dark, the playful and the deadly serious."
The Sunday Age
"Not only is Turrini’s text demanding and provocative, but also the collision of three languages, the physical style and the dramatic content create a riveting performance"
Herald Sun
