... a tongue in cheek look at the oppression and evolution of an island ...
In a remarkable fusion of traditional Polynesian and contemporary dance theatre, three tourists journey
to a fantasy island expecting an exotic, blissful, dreamlike holiday.
Brisbane based dance ensemble Polytoxic unveil the cultural reality of Polynesia with an episodic
ride through the past and present, with historical missionary diary entries, a hilarious Elvis
inspired advert, a comedic floorshow performance and an insight into a samoan girl’s experience
of everyday life.
Mix in bright gorgeous costumes and frame each image with a clever, ever-changing set, and you have
Polytoxic’s holiday postcard to you from Samoa.
"Behind all the laughs is a commitment to communicate the paradox and complexity of contemporary
Polynesia not only through clever narrative through-lines but also the performance's choreographic range."
Mary Ann Hunter, RealTime
"In a (coco) nutshell Teuila Postcards beautifully seams the kitsch with the intellectual, the erotic/exotic
fantasy with the real and ‘mundane’, colonial history with retro pop. Polytoxic loves you? In a nutshell we love Polytoxic!!"
