Zulya’s unique sound, distinctly Russian song writing and the extraordinary musicianship of her band members
create melancholy, beauty and drama while weaving through a combination of musical styles.
Zulya, originally from Tatarstan in central Russia, is familiar to audiences throughout Australia as a performer of traditional
and original music derived from her Tatar and Russian cultural roots.
Zulya and the Children of the Underground released their latest album, 3 Nights in Australia in April 2007 and in Europe in May
2007. It has been awarded the prestigious ARIA award for the best world music album in Australia and received extremely positive
coverage in major press around the world, including a glowing 5 star review from UK’s Songlines.
The album also spent 4 months in the top 10 of the European World Music Charts in 2007 – the only other Australian album to have
come close to achieving this level of recognition was Zulya and the Children of the Underground’s previous release, The Waltz of
Emptiness (and Other Songs on Russian Themes) which was also very highly acclaimed and described as ‘Antipodean brilliance’ (Songlines).
"...she is one of the most important contributors to the overall pattern of a contemporary Australian music in this society."
Felix Hayman, ABC Classic FM
"...Her insights into the music and its cultural under-pinnings, and her commitment to and passion for the exploration of multicultural
music in Australia have always been a highlight of these discussions. I have been entranced by her journeys into new and exciting
territory; I have been stunned by her musicianship; I have been enthused by her vision."
