Multi award-winning Zulya Karmalova is the leading proponent of Tatar and Russian music in Australia as well as one of the most
versatile and accomplished vocalists on the world music scene today.
Since her move to Australia in 1991 Zulya has developed a totally original approach as an affirmation of her unique identity - an
affirmation that takes her Tatar and Russian background to totally new places and in completely new ways.
Zulya and the Children of the Underground released their latest album, 3 Nights in April 2007.
It has been awarded the prestigious ARIA award for the Best World Music album in Australia and received extremely positive coverage in major press around the world, including a glowing 5 star review from UK’s Songlines.
The album also spent 4 months in the top 10 of the European World Music Charts in 2007 – the only other Australian album to have come close to achieving this level of recognition was Zulya and the Children of the Underground’s previous release, The Waltz of Emptiness (and Other Songs on Russian Themes) which was also very highly acclaimed and described as ‘Antipodean brilliance’ (Songlines).
Although she is well-known in Australia, Zulya's performances of her stunning blend of traditional and original music have recently been enchanting audiences from Serbia to Siberia, Luxembourg to Moscow, Tatarstan to Helsinki and almost everywhere in between.
The Children of the Underground haS been working with Zulya since 2004.
This band comprises of four accomplished musicians in their own right: Andrew Tanner, Lucas Michailidis, Anthony Schulz, and Justin Marshall.
With diverse music backgrounds including classical, jazz, folk, rock, Latin and gypsy The Children of the Underground have a profound influence on Zulya’s own compositions as well as providing unique arrangements of traditional songs.
